Scope and Content Culter Paper Mills, Peterculter, Aberdeenshire This was a large paper mill, originally water-powered, later much enlarged. Most of the buildings were built of granite rubble. This view shows the mill from the north east, with the tall chimney-stack. Paper mills required large amounts of steam to dry the paper and for other purposes. The Aberdeen area developed as a centre for paper-making in the 18th century, and there are still several mills operating on the river Don. This was the last one on the Dee, and has been closed and demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
