Scope and Content Detail of datestone on wall-head of main front of Ardpatrick House, Argyll and Bute Ardpatrick had been the seat of the MacAlisters of Loup throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The existing house was built in 1769 for Angus MacAlister by the master-mason John Menelaws and his brother Thomas, from Greenock. At the wall-head of the principal, or east façade, of the house above the central window with its lugged and moulded architrave, the date 1769 is incised on the ashlar band. A document of 1772 blames the mason for greatly exceeding the estimate of £500, and states that the house was 'scarce half finished'. The window tax returns indicate it was occupied by 1774. It was sold in 1798 to a Walter Campbell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
