Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Buckholm Mill, Galashiels, Scottish Borders This was the last large water-driven textile mill in Galashiels, built from 1846 for Henry Sanderson. It was built beside the Gala Water, with a tunnel connecting the weir on the river to the waterwheel in the basement of the mill. This shows the entrance to the tunnel, with, in the foreground, the sluices controlling the flow of water from the weir into the lade. The width of the tunnel mouth gives an idea of the scale of the water power used in the mill. The mill was lit by electricity in 1884, at a time when mills were generally lit by gas. It was in multiple occupation in 1968, with at least four firms using it. The complex has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
