This project, which RCAHMS is undertook in partnership with Comhairle nan Eilean Sair (Western Isles local authority), aims to improve the historic environment records for a part of Scotland first visited by the Commission nearly 100 years ago. Desk-based assessment was followed by field recording and the results have been made available through the RCAHMS Canmore website and the local authority sites and monuments record.

The first and second phases of the project (in 2012) took place at Balranald on the NW coast of North Uist and comprised landscape recording followed by the detailed survey of selected sites.

The third phase (April 2013) was undertaken at Gleann Uisinis on the east coast of South Uist and included both landscape recording and detailed site-survey, in conjunction with Chris Barrowman of Historic Scotland.

The project included a record enhancement aspect that saw the digitisation of both existing archive material and new material resulting from detailed site survey. As part of its commitment to community engagement, RCAHMS liaised closely with the Local Authority Archaeologist, local heritage groups and interested individuals.

The project included visits to more than 400 sites, and the creation of over 300 digital images available on Canmore, including 15 measured surveys.
