Lifeboat House [NAT]

OS GIS ep. 4.

Formerly entered at incorrect location ND 2652 5087.

Not to be confused with lifeboat station at Salmon Rock (ND 37150 50301), for which see ND35SE 362.

This is presumably the lifeboat house that Leach notes as having been built in 1872 'close to the service bridge'. It had doors at both ends, allowing the boat to be taken through the streets to a launching pint in the Outer Harbour. The RNLI took over this station in 1895, and continued to use it until 1913; it was demolished in 1987.

This building is not indicated on the current OS (GIS) AIB.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 4 April 2006.

N Leach 1999.
