Water from St. Mungo's Well (Roxb 12 NW 14) was led to the Town Cross in 1706.
RCAHMS 1957
The market cross was recently restored. The shaft is part of the earlier cross. A proclamation was made from it in 1586.

At NT 46978 28467 is an ornamental well-house on top of which is the Town Cross of Selkirk, but these, says the Burgh Surveyor, were erected in 1903. He also doubts that the cross is ancient; certainly it bears no signs of antiquity. The original site is not apparent. Various references were consulted without result.
