As part of an archaeological assessment undertaken by Scotia Archaeology Limited along the proposed new route of the A1 between Tranent and Haddington in 1994, a geophysical survey grid, measuring 100m by 20m, was set up on an elevated ridge that lay 150-200m north of the church at Gladsmuir - an area suggested as a likely location for the siting of a motte.
The survey revealed a rectangular anomaly, approximately 8m square and open on it's north-west side, perhaps representing the remains of a stone building or a small ditched enclosure and possibly represents the remains of a house within a bailey.
NMRS MS/733/117.
The putative sub-square feature identified in 1994 at NT 4585 7350 turned out, upon excavation, to be two rubble drains in close proximity.
