Circumstances of Loss Details

-----------------------------

The NEVADA II ran aground en-route to Bathurst carrying government stores and a small amount of commercial cargo.

Sources: Ministry of Transport, and letter from D J Jones.

Surveying Details

-----------------------------

14 September 1967. The Ministry of Transport now own the hull. Part of the cargo was salved.

Reports from Ministry of Transport, and letter from D J Jones, 4 July 1969.

The wreck lies on the NE side of the Rubba Mor peninsular, parallel to the shore, and between the shore and a reef. The reef is visible at low water and lies 76.2 metres offshore near the NW tip of the peninsula, merging with coastline about 275 metres to the east. The bows of ship face east and lie in approx 3 metres of water at low water. The stern, being in 15.2 metres. The wreck has been broken by sea action and some salvage work, but the hull is still in one piece. At low water, the staunchions or deck supports project 0.6 metres from water, from the forward part of ship. The wreck was salvaged 1942-43. It was cut down to the waterline and some cargo was removed. In 1957, the propellor was removed. In 1968-69, various non-ferrous fittings were removed.

Report from C J Oldfield dated 26 June 1969.

29 April 1970. Salvage work was reported during the winter of 1968/69 by Mr J Brooks.

3 September 1980. The hull is reported now to be completely collapsed and that no part which break the water surface at low water springs. The highest part of the wreck stands about 3 metres above the general seabed depth of 15.2 metres.

Report by I D Slade, 21 August 1980.

25 November 1983. The reported position of 56 41 24N, 006 29 27W is accurate to a few seconds of arc. Otherwise the general information above is correct.

Report by C Michael, 4 November 1983.

Hydrographic Office, 1995.
