 SRP NOTE

Project Scotland's Rural Past (SRP)

Notes A township and two farmstead with enclosures (Nosas Site Survey Nos 417-440) are situated in a shallow, sheltered SE facing valley, above a tributary of the Scardroy Burn, 1km W of Scardroy Lodge. Although steep in places the area is generally fertile and intensively grazed. Traces of earlier cultivation remain in places.

The township (Nosas Site Survey Nos 416-424) is centred on NH 206 517 and is located on the steeper slopes N of the burn. It comprises 8 buildings, an enclosure, a pit and a head dyke. The buildings survive as low rectangular and sub rectangular stone and turf footings. Three of the smaller buildings are probably former shielings and there are discontinuous lengths of earth banks and enclosures, bounded by a sinuous head dyke along the W side of the site. The township was once probably more extensive but has been partly destroyed by the building of the later farmsteads.

The remains of a farmstead, and numerous enclosures (Nosas Site Survey Nos 429-431 and 437-440), are centred on NH 2057 5163 and lie on the S side of the small burn. The largest enclosure is multi-sided and has, within it, several clearance cairns and traces of broad cultivation rigs.

A further farmstead, probably a sheep farm, occupies the valley floor in a relatively sheltered position and comprises two substantial buildings, one of which is shown roofed on the First edition OS of 1881 and two enclosures (Nosas Site Survey 425-428)
