Glencoe House (now Glencoe Hospital), Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, 1896-9 Mansion built for the ageing Canadian Scot, Sir Donald Alexander Smith, later Lord Strathcona, shorn of its wings in 1965. Scots Renaissance detail in warm red sandstone alleviates the uncompromising ruggedness of the grey granite walls which tower above Loch Leven. Less austere, the asymmetrical entrance front adds to the repertoire of 17th-century Scots detail with an ogee-roofed porch and bay windows. Despite the proximity of Scotland's greatest slate quarry, Rowand Anderson preferred to indulge his penchant for polychromy, and the house was roofed with red clay tiles (replaced with local slate in the 1920s). Original plaster ceilings, chimney pieces and panelling survive inside. Gate Lodge, Rowand Anderson, contemporary with house, in contrasting English Arts & Crafts style.

[Sir Donald Smith (1820-1914), created the first Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal in 1897, returned to Britain in 1896 as Canadian High Commissioner, having made his fortune in the Hudson Bay Company, and in financing the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railroad.]
