Publication Account (1982)

In 1560 the cathedral chancellor made over his manse to a local laird which was described as being ‘a waste tenement' bounded 'by the manse or waste tenement of the Treasurer on the west' (MacKay, 1920, 41). By 1801 the manses of the Chancellor and Treasurer had vanished and that of the Chanonry was in ruins (MacKay, 1920, 11). The two former manses were located to the east of the burn where St. Michael's house and garden now are, and the Dean's residence is still known as the Deanery (MacKay, 1920, 10). A number of the prebend's manses were situated in the west end of the burgh (MacKay, 1920, 12)
