'Edinburgh Drawing Institution

19 Hill Street, Edinburgh

Statement by the Directors of the Edinburgh Drawing Institution explanatory of the Object and General System of Instruction to be pursued in that Establishment (Edinburgh 1825)

pp12-13 'After some lapse of time, we succeeded in obtaining a very central and eligible situation in Hill Street, where we shall be enabled to have one room of fifty-four feet by thirty, lighted from the top by a range of sky-lights; an apartment for the permanent exhibition of the works of pupils; a room for the Masters; with suitable accomodation for the Matron of the Establishment...'

The Directors of the new Institution had first approached the Board of Trustees for Manufactures via Lord Meadowbank to enquire whether they might lease, on a temporary basis, the premises of the Trustees' Academy at 5 Picardy Place. The Trustees Academy was about to be transferred to the new Royal Institution Building on Princes Street. Negotiations between the two parties seem to have ended inconclusively. See John Mason's article, 'The Edinburgh School of Design' in The Book of the Old Edinburgh Club vol XXVII 1949 p 67 ff.

Activities

Project (1997)

The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.

The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.
