Public house on N side of drummond Street. Woodwork on exterior including a timber Ionic pilastered front with balustraded parapet and segmentally arched panel.

Extant as Rutherford's since at least 1837-38 (Edinburgh Post Office Directory), premesis originally shared with other businesses.

Activities

Project (1997)

The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.

The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.

Field Visit (28 November 2001)

Trademark composed of a profile of a bridled horse's head, painted copper colour, facing west between 18 and 34 of date, surmounted by a segmental pediment carved with flowers. Two relief Doric pillars are carved on either side of trademark. Lengths of pedestal railings extend the length of the roof on either side of centrally placed trademark, each ending in a scroll surmounted by a ball.
