Monument [NAT]

OS 1:10,000 map, 1992.

Monument built in the mid 19th century by Dr William Henderson to define the summit of his property.

[Newspaper reference cited].

NMRS, MS/712/79.

This monument is situated on the summit of Tyrebagger Hill and, if it was not for the surrounding conifer plantation, would command excellent views in all directions. It comprises a solid, granite-built tower measuring about 3m in diameter at the base, with an external flight of steps leading from the bottom of the SE side to a level platform 3.3m above the ground. The iron hand-railing of the steps continues around the edge of the platform, and a socket for a flag-pole is visible at its centre. A stone set into the E side of the monument, about 1m above ground level, bears two sets of the incised initials WD, one set larger than the other. Another stone, on the SW side, bears the initials HMK.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 25 September 2001.
