N56 11.7 W2 47

NLO: Elie [name: NT 493 997]

St Monans [name: NO 525 016].

Location formerly entered as NO 5139 0057 [N56 11.7 W2 47].

About 10.30 pm on Sunday evening, Elie coastguards observed that a steamer had run ashore near Ardross Castle in a strong westerly wind. The rocket LSA was despatched to the scene, but when the first rocket was fired, the rope jammed amongst rocks, rendering it useless. Anstruther lifeboat set out, first being rowed clear of the rocks, then by sail, and reached the stranded steamer about 3.00 am. Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting alongside in the heavy seas, but within 5 minutes of closing the steamer, all 18 crew and a dog were taken aboard the lifeboat. The return journey did not take much time, and by 4.00 am the shipwrecked crew were landed at Anstruther.

Later in the morning the lifeboat made a second journey to the steamer and brought back a shipload of clothes and other belongings of the crew.

SS ANSGAR of Copenhagen, 1365 tons gross, was bound light from London to Methil. Captain Henningsen had been in command of the vessel for only 14 days, as her previous captain had been taken unwell.

The steamer's stern was completely submerged, and it was thought that the steamer was likely to become a total wreck, although if calm weather prevailed, it might be possible to save some of the fittings, although there was little possibility of the vessel being refloated.
