A large barque, the AXEL of Friedrickstadt was driven ashore at Dysart on Tuesday. Between 3.00 and 4.00 am she was sighted from the coastguard station, drifting helplessly before the wind. Her rudder was evidently disabled and she had become unmanageable. In about half an hour, she was dashed on the rocks between the Noop and the harbour. The crew of ten were all saved. The rock on which she was driven was shattered by the force of the impact, the hull of the ship being at the same time, seriously damaged. The AXEL had left London about a fortnight ago for Christiansand with a cargo of 509 tons of coke. She experienced terribly stormy weather in the North Sea, and made for the Forth for shelter. A large number of people visited the scene of the wreck during the day. Several even clambered on deck and assisted in cutting away the masts. The grog keg was broached, with the result that one man had to be taken home in a cart, along with the boxes, ropes, etc. saved from the wreck.

There are 16 vessels ashore in the Firth of Forth, east and west of Kirkcaldy. Seven of these were in the harbour at Wemyss, and owing to the sea wall being carried away, were left without shelter, and are all likely to become total wrecks.

At Dysart: AXEL, 520 tons register.
