Project (1997)
The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.
The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.
Field Visit (7 November 2001)
Gigantic steel 'Scotsman' logo featuring three central thistles and horizontally spreading leaves, all fully three-dimensional, above a rectangular textured panel which carries the curved textured steel panel with the glass lettering inserted into it. The thistles stand out against the large expanse of glass behind.
The sign is a technical tour-de-force.
The masthead was designed by Phil Johnson and Jois Hunter of Phil Johnson & Co., Ratho Byres Forge. Adrienne McStay designed the glass lettering.
The various textures on the panels are derived from machines and processes seen by the artist-blacksmiths during their visit to The Scotsman's Newhaven printing works. The tops of the thistles take the form of rolled up newspapers.
