In 1985 the deck of the original Jardine Bridge was demolished following a survey by Borders Regional Council. Babtie Shaw and Morton designed a new composite bridge deck, retaining the original piers. The new deck has two weather-resistant steel girders, supporting full-width precast concrete slabs shear-connected to the beams, the whole being topped off with insitu concrete.
