90 and 92 Grove Street operated seperately as commercial premesis in the late 19th Century and the first half of the 20th Century.

Activities

Project (1997)

The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.

The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.

Head and torso of a man. His head is bowed and his hands are holding his sides. His shoulders are holding up part of the building. Leaf decoration to both sides and around door.

Rectangular panel carved in low relief. In the centre, issuing from a coronet, is an arm with clenched fist holding a mullet, surmounted by a crescent. The arm is surrounded by oak and fig leaves; the motto is on a ribbon at the foot of the panel.

On the side of the building there are various ornamentations.

Inscriptions : On ribbon (incised letters): SOLA VIRTUS NOBILITAT (= Virtue alone ennobles)

Six panels carved with plant-forms form three 'T' shapes above and between two windows on the ground floor at 92 Grove Street: (1) a horizontal panel carved with a branch with leaves, above a vertical panel carved with the stem of a lily; (2) a horizontal panel carved with a plant form [eroded], above a vertical panel carved with a vine branch with grapes; (3) a horizontal panel carved with a branch with leaves, above a vertical panel carved with fig leaves.

Above the door at the corner of the building is a half-length naked, bearded man with his hands on his abdomen. Below his stomach are leaves.

Between the first and second floors on the West Fountainbridge façade is an arched panel carved with a clenched right hand holding a star. Below the hand is a ribbon with motto, and to either side is foliage.

Other foliate decorations are distributed over the façade.
