Archaeology Notes

NT37SE 116 NT 39562 73794

Cropmarks have been recorded by aerial photography (RCAHMSAP 1995) adjacent to a rail embankment 130m NE of Remains of Bankton (NT37SE 43). A ditch running SSE-NNW and curving towards the E is visible for a distance of at least 100m (NT c.3954 7376 to NT c.3958 7382). The ditch is approximately 4m-5m wide and a second very narrow ditch feature runs parallel to it on its S side. It is possible that these represent only the NW side of a large enclosure with an internal palisade line.

Information from RCAHMS (KB) 15 December 1999

A field boundary or possible plantation bank, which is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (East Lothian 1854-55, sheet VIII), has been recorded as ephemeral cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1995).
