A garage site on East Bowmont Street was formerly used as stables for racehorses. Racing at Kelso dates back to the early nineteenth century, when the Duke of Roxburghe built a new racing stand at Berrymoss, north of Kelso in 1822. The single-storeyed stable buildings on East Bowmont Street probably date to the 1850s.
Photographs from 1974 show that the stables had been converted into a garage, and comprised a cobbled courtyard surrounded by buildings. The courtyard nowhas a slated roof, supported on slender pillars.
