Note: the items marked out as "gravestones" in the catalogue slips are in fact slate slabs, their function being to enable the stacking of slate loads. See RCAHMS Vol 2 Lorn, No 356.

These slate slabs on end on the jetty/quayside may havebeen built as part of the harbour upgrade of c.1826. There were originally ten such compartments. This is where the slate awaiting to be loaded onto boats woud have been stacked according to size.
