Photographic Survey (March 1966)

Photographs of buildings on Malta Terrace, Edinburgh, including Malta House by the Scottish National Buildings Record/Ministry of Works/RCAHMS in 1966.

Watching Brief (19 February 2014 - 24 March 2014)

AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by s1 Developments to undertake a programme of archaeological and historic building recording works in association with a new development at Malta Court, Edinburgh. The works included an historic building survey of the existing Malta House to the north of the site prior to its renovation and the adjacent two-storey outbuildings block prior to its demolition together with a 10% archaeological evaluation of the development area. There has been a building in the position of the present Malta House since at least the 18th century although between 1804 - 1817 the layout of the house changed so may have been rebuilt or at least heavily extended. It continued to expand in the 19th century, perhaps being rebuilt or substantially altered in the early 19th century. The interior of the house has been heavily modernised, although some original/early features remains including the decorative ceilings to some of the main ground floor rooms and a marble fireplace in the downstairs lounge. The outbuildings date from between 1852 - 1876. They originally extended up to the main south-west boundary of the site, although this block has now been demolished. It consisted of a row of roughcast rendered stone rubble buildings with seven separate spaces to the ground floor and one large one space to the first floor. The evaluation was undertaken on the garden area in front of the house and equated to 47.5 linear metres of trenching. No archaeological finds or features were identified, bar a small deposit of demolition rubble to the east side which is probably associated with the building of the house.
