(NJ 0370 5891) The present market cross of Forres stands on the site of the former. It was built in 1844. The base of the former cross was left in position and, the new cross was built over it. Nothing of the old cross can now be seen.

The present market cross is at NJ 0370 5890. Three carved stones from the top of the old market cross are preserved in the Falconer Museum, Forres.

Watching Brief (20 October 2023)
NJ 03701 58907 - NJ 03725 58920 A watching brief was conducted in October 2023 on the south side of Forres High Street, Elgin for a cable trench for new lighting close to the Market Cross and the Tolbooth. Work was partially limited due to depth of excavation with area being heavily disturbed by existing services. No archaeological features or deposits were revealed.
