Archaeology Notes

NO75NW 132 72470 56756 and 72495 56756

For Montrose Harbour (centred NO 712 512) and associated buildings, see NO75NW 44.00.

NO 7255 5674. Two brick and concrete gun-emplacements are situated just above the road from Ferryden to Scurdie Ness. The emplacements are supplied with overhead covers. There is mention in records (Public Record Office) of two 18 pounders at Ferryden manned by the Home Guard. These guns were designed to provide covering gunfire onto the beaches in the event of an enemy landing. This calibre of gun would fit the surviving emplacements. The battery could also bring gunfire down on to Montrose airfield (NO75NW 31.00) should it have been captured.

J Guy 2000; NMRS MS 810/9

The two gun-emplacements are visible on RAF WW II air photographs (Vertical and oblique, sorties 772.H21, 6.83-6.84, flown 16 February 1942 and 309-22, 283-284, flown c.1941 respectively), which show that both were camouflaged.

There is no photographic evidence for an acccommodation camp in the vicinity of the emplacements.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), November 2005.
