Archaeological Notes

NJ16NW 35 1457 6809.

(Area: NJ 147 681) Cup and ring-marked rocks lie among whins on the floor of a little valley through which passes a pathway across the fields from Easter Backlands of Roseisle (NJ 1436 6781) to Gallowhill Cottages (NJ 1500 6810). The rocks lie about 1/4 mile W of Gallowhill Cottages and about 20 yards north of the pathway.
Only the size and number of the rocks has prevented them from being broken up by the farmer M MacDonald.
J M Davidson 1939.

These rocks were located at NJ 1457 6809 in a patch of whins. There are about seven flat outcrops in an area measuring about 25.0m by 10.0m only two of which appear to be cup-marked. The cups are all on the horixontal surfaces.
The more easterly of the two, a rock measuring 4.0m by 2.3m and roughly rectangular, bears at least 33 cup marks, one surrounded by 3 rings, three by two rings, and four by one ring, and the others simple cups. Also on the rock is an artificially cut rectangular hollow with a sloping base, measuring 18 centimetres by 8 cms by 8 cms deep which is possibly a mould. The NW end of the stone was not fully uncovered and may contain more cups.
The other stone of similar size about 19.0m to the SW bears seven cup marks but no rings.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
