Archaeology Notes

NJ52SE 84 centred 5870 2397

The ruins of this farmsteading are situated in pasture in a shallow depression on a gentle E-facing slope. They comprise: a late-19th century farmhouse forming the WNW wing of an L-shaped range; a detached building, probably the earlier farmhouse, lying immediately to the E; and a mill, some 70m to the E.

The late 19th-century farmhouse measures 14.3m from NNE to SSW by 3.9m transversely over stone walls 0.7m in thickness and up to 2m in height. The NNE gable, however, has been removed. There is a central entrance with flanking windows in the ESE side, and a central window in the WNW side. A fireplace set into the external face of the SSW gable indicates the presence of an outshot that has otherwise been reduced to little more than a stony platform. The SSW end of this outshot is adjoined by the footings of what was probably a byre forming the SSW wing of the range. The ESE end of the byre is missing but a midden hollow lies in the angle of the open side which faces E. Nothing is now visible of the portion of the range that extended NNE of the farmhouse and is shown on the both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1870, sheet lxiii and 1901, sheet lxiii.SE respectively).

The building that may have been the original farmhouse measures 10.4m from ESE to WNW by 5.1m transversely over walls up to 1m in height and has an entrance in the middle of the SSE wall. The building is shown on the 1st edition of the OS map lying on the N side of what may have been a small garden.

The mill is the best preserved building in the farmsteading and its walls and gables still stand to their full height. It lies immediately E of a boggy pond and measures externally 14.2m from E to W by 5.5m transversely; there are two entrances in the N side, and a wheel-pit is set against the middle of the S side. The interior is set on two levels, the W end being 1.3m higher than the E. A sheep-dip, making use of the differing floor-levels, has been built against the interior of the N wall.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 26 June 1999.

Three buildings in the form of a west-facing 'U' depicted on the 1797 plan of the lands of Boggs (E 33915 and E 33916 CN) seem to be located higher up the slope and to the south of this location. However, it could be that they indicate a predecessor of this farm.
