Archaeology Notes

NJ27SW 1 c. 230 711.

(Approx. NJ 2300 7113) There are shell-mounds about a quarter of a mile west of Lossiemouth. They are about twenty yards from the high-tied mark but much higher.

A section was revealed by blasting at the lead mines there.

Finds included sherds of coarse mediaeval pottery, bones of fish and animals and shells of edible shell-fish.

E G Duff 1882.

The area centred NJ 2300 7113 is as described by Duff (1882) but as it cannot be certain that the lead mine shaft published on OS 25" 1870 was the only one in this much disturbed area, the siting of the shell heaps cannot be more accurately determined.

Visited by OS (R D L) 10 November 1962.

A collection of Medieval pottery from this site is now on display in Elgin Museum. The pottery was donated in 1934.

Visited by OS (A A) 17 May 1971; Information from Elgin Museum Accessions Register.
