Activities

Orkney Smr Note (1999)

At the edge of a field of rough grazing, parallel to the fence is a large earthen dam, orientated NE-SW. It survives to a width of c.3m, to a maximum height of 1.5m and is c. 75m long.

Local knowledge suggests that the dam helped supply the mill pond at Sandside (OR2461.), however it would seem more likely that it is associated with the click-mill (Moore and Wilson 1998:221).

The dam has been badly effected by livestock using it as dry trackway. This has resulted in severe erosion of the top of the dam and an 8m wide breach of the dam near its N end (possibly where the original sluice was ).
