Activities

Project (2011)

Headland Archaeology Ltd was commissioned by Glasgow City Council to undertake a programme of Historic Building Recording in connection with the M74 Completion Project.

The programme of work included a desk-based assessment, detailed survey of the building and a watching brief on demolition work.

The Scotland Street Engine Works were founded by the McOnie family c.1840 and quickly became part of a group of engineering works specialising in the manufacture of stationary steam engines and machinery for sugar production, much of which was exported to countries such as Java, Mauritius and Brazil. The original group of buildings include fitting shops, offices, a boiler shed and a smithy. The buildings date from 1840 to 1880 with later alterations, and although the interiors had been stripped and re-finished, something of the scale of the operation can still be recognised. The company went through a number of changes in ownership, and the final phase of engineering was under McOnie, Harvey &

Company eventually going into liquidation in 1930.
