(NJ 4819 0440) Church (NAT) (In Ruins)

OS 6" map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., (1901)

Church of Tarland, dedicated to St Mothulach (H Scott 1915-61), was gifted by Morgund, Earl of Mar, to the Priory of St Andrews in 1165. The old church, unroofed, ruinous and used for internments, has a belfry dated 1762, the date the church was built. It was in use till 1870 when the new church (at NJ 4844 0468), was built.

A Jervise 1875-9; H Scott (Fasti Eccles Scot) 1915-61.

The old church c.20.0m by c.9.0m still stands to gable height, the belfry being on the W gable. No trace of any earlier structure. Burial ground still in use.

Visited by OS (R L) 20 October 1968.
