Archaeology Notes

NT48SW 2 from 4505 7938 to 4462 8003

A rifle range, extending from Harestone Wood in the SE to Craigielaw Point in the NW, is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Haddingtonshire, 1901, sheet iv NE). Range stances are depicted running at 100 yard intervals from the SE towards the targets along the edge of the shore S of Craigielaw Point. Three rectangular structures are depicted, two of which are annotated as butts. The northern of these is also depicted on the OS 1:2500 scale map (1967) as a rectangular, partly roofed structure at NT 4464 8002. This may possibly have served as a magazine. For associated drill hall, see NT48SE 86.

Information from RCAHMS (IFr, 8 December 2000).
