Market Cross, Old Rayne, 17th century. Although the small village of Old Rayne is now off the main road, it was once an important market centre, having been created a burgh of barony in 1492. The mercat cross is well preserved, with an octagonal granite shaft and a wrought-iron saltire finial, the whole standing on five circular steps.

(NJ 6746 2831) Market Cross (NAT)
OS 6" map, (1959)

Only the shaft and steps of the market cross remain to a height of 12 feet (NSA 1845). The remains of an iron staple to hold the jougs is still visible (Small 1900). The New Statistical Account (NSA) and SDD state that the cross probably dates from the late 17th century, but Jervise (1875-9) mentions that in 1472, Bishop Elphinstone was empowered to erect a cross, court-house etc.
