Summary Record (15 February 2012)

The church and presbytery were designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson 1885-6 and paid for by the 3rd Marquess of Bute. Bute had sponsored research into Byzantine architecture and is recorded as having wamnted to build a church with a dome. Initially he proposed building a new church in Troon but the Catholic community there refused so a site was chosen in Galston. The dedication to St Sophia refers both to Hagia Sophia, Istanbul which the Marquess had visited and in memory of his mother Lady Sophia Hastings of nearby Loudoun Castle.
