Archaeology Notes

NJ62SW 20 6042 2444.

(Area: NJ 603 244) The existence of a BA cemetery is suggested by the finding of three short cists containing beakers in this area.

a) The first was found on 13 November 1906, 292yds (267m) NNW (? of NJ62SW 21) and 266yds (243m) E of the parish boundary. Of interest because the side-slabs were dressed and clay had been used for paving, luting and for mortaring part of the east end. The presence of stones suggested that there might have been a cairn. The beaker (Clarke's Group N3) is in the Museum of Aberdeen University.

b) The second cist was found on 3 April 1908, 18" (0.45m) SW of the first. The side-slabs were dressed but unluted. The beaker (Clarke's Group is in the Museum of Aberdeen University (240.6A).

c) The third cist was found within a few feet of the others and within a few days of the second. It contained two beakers (Clarke's Group N2) set in diagonally opposite corners, but its measurements are not known. There is a suggestion that it may have been larger than the others and may have contained two burials. The beakers are in Inverurie Museum (Nos 5 and 6). One is complete but only the lower part of the other survives.

J G Callander 1907; 1909; 1912; D L Clarke 1970.

Mains of Leslie, Premnay. The Beakers from this site are attributed to the following groups:

no. 1470 (Aberdeen Mus) N3 (Late Northern British group)

no. 1471 (Aberdeen Mus) N2 (Developed Northern British group)

no. 1472 (Inverurie Mus) N2 (Developed Northern British group)

no. 1473 (Inverurie Mus) N2 (Developed Northern British group)

D L Clarke 1970.

Callander's measurements suggest the site lay at NJ 6042 2444, an area now occupied by a small plantation, otherwise no further information.

Visited by OS (AA) 30 August 1973.

GRC/AAS nos. NJ62SW 19 and NJ62SW 35 -7. Locations cited as NJ 60442 2444 in each case.

NMRS, MS/712/60.

Between November 1906 and April 1908 four Beakers were recovered from three cists that were found on Mains of Leslie farm; two of the Beakers are in Marischal College Museum, Aberdeen, and the other two are in Inverurie Museum. The accession numbers of those in Marischal College are ABDUA: 19706 (Clarke 1970, No. 1470) and ABDUA: 19697 (Clarke 1970, No. 1471). The collection of Inverurie Museum has been re-catalogued, but the new catalogue is incomplete and there is no easy system of identifying the new accession numbers (formerly Nos. 5 & 6) of the other two Beakers.
