This hand loom factory dates from 1833. In 1857 there were seven hand loom rooms, and a steam powered winding house and a warping room. Power looms were installed after 1857. There was a drying green with 140 posts which were replaced by sheds in 1871 and 1903. Five or six sheds were added in the late 19th cenury housing eight-yard looms.

The works are described in the Object Name Book of the Ordnance Survey as 'Belmont Factory (canvas); 'At the E end of Mount Pleasant Place'; ' A large factory situated north of Belmont in which are employed 120 hands for the weaving of canvas floor cloth. The weaving is wholly by hand-looms. A small steam engine is used in the rpocess of winding. Wm Robertson is the foreman, the proprietor, Mr Bell'.
