Archaeology Notes

NJ71NE 41 c. 79 16

See also NJ71NE 47.

A hammer of gneiss, found at Kintore [name: NJ 79 16], measures 4 13/16" (122mm) in length by 2 1/8 inches (54mm) across one end and about 1 11/16 inch (43mm) across the other. It has a shaft-hole drilled straight through at right angles to the ends, which are blunted. One face is finely polished and the other much weather-worn.

It was exhibited to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland by John Rae of Aberdeen, on 10th February 1890.

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1890.

The present whereabouts of this stone hammer is not known; there is no record that it was donated to the then National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland after it was exhibited to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland by John Rae of Aberdeen on 10th February 1890.

See also NJ71NE 47 for an axe-hammer from Kintore that is in the Royal Museum of Scotland, but could not be traced by Roe (FES Roe 1966); it was formerly represented in the museum by a cast (donated by John Rae in 1880 - Accession no. AH 47).
