The Goth, Main Street, 1911, Thomas Roberts

Originally The Gothenburg, it is Armadale's most distinctive landmark, designed for the Armadale Public House Society (dedicated to curbing alcoholic excess), based on the Swedish improved-pub model. Stained-glass windows and extensive columned interior added, 1924, by Peddie & Kinnear, followed by a curiously leaning stone clock tower (not unlike that of a Scottish tolbooth) with an arcaded ground floor and louvred octagonal cap in late art nouveau. It was erected in memory of Malcolm Mallace, President of the Society.

Taken from "West Lothian: An Illustrated Architectural Guide", by Stuart Eydmann, Richard Jaques and Charles McKean, 2008. Published by the Rutland Press http://www.rias.org.uk
