Trial Trench (12 November 1996)

NO 4059 3070 In November 1996 SUAT undertook an archaeological assessment in which two trenches were excavated and 19th/20th-century surfaces, wall foundations and deposits were encountered. A make-up deposit containing residual medieval pottery was also found. It was concluded that a combination of quarrying and 19th-century development had removed any medieval archaeological deposits that may have existed, and that extended excavation on the site was therefore not justified.

Trial trenching by SUAT Ltd. In 1996 revealed that quarrying and development in the 19th century had largely destroyed any traces of medieval occupation that may have existed, although some medieval pottery was recovered.

On the 12th November 1996 the Scottish Urban Archaeological Trust undertook an archaeological assessment of the above site. Two trenches were excavated and 19th/20th century surfaces, wall foundations and deposits were encountered. A makeup deposit containing residual medieval pottery was also found. It was concluded that a combination of quarrying and 19th century development had removed any medieval archaeological deposits that may have existed and that further, extended excavation on the site was therefore not justified.

The excavated trenches revealed that the site had been levelled with stiff clay and clay loan deposits containing abudant fragmented sandstone. This material contained residual sherds of medieval pottery and was probably brought to the site after it was quarried. The walls encountered were considered to be 19th/20th century and had been cut through the levelling material. After demolition the site had again been levelled with compacted demolition material and a tarmac surface laid down. The tarmacadam was probably the surface for the site when it was used for car parking or the 'City Zoo'. The site was again made-up and landscaped when the Marketgait ring road was completed.

The excavations failed to locate deposits or features related to the medieval use of the site, and the town's defensive wall was not encountered. It appears that all traces of medieval activity were erased when the site was quarried. The Trust considers that further archaeological work on the site is not warranted.
