Archaeology Notes

NO61SW 8014 c. 645 113

N56 17.6 W2 34.5

NLO: Carr Brigs [name: NO 645 112]

North Carr Beacon [name: NO 646 116]

Fife Ness [name: NO 638 098].

Location formerly entered as NO c. 646 113 [N56 17.6 W2 34.3].

The mastheads of a sunken vessel, apparently a foreign schooner of about 100 tons burden, were seen lying in 6 fathoms of water. Her bearings are: St.Andrews E by N, [distance] 6 miles [and] Babitness SW, distance 2 miles. One of the St. Andrews fishing boats brought from the wreck the mainboom and gaff, part of the mainsail and the main top mast.

It was supposed the vessel had struck upon Carr Rock [Carr Briggs] sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, and filling rapidly, foundered at the spot indicated. No trace of the vessel's boat led to hopes that the crew had escaped, and that the vessel had been abandoned some time prior to the foundering.
