World War One Audit of Surviving Remains (20 June 2013)

The Buckie West Church Street drill hall was built in 1885 for the 5th Banffshire Volunteers (according to an inscription on the building) and is marked on the 2nd and 3rd epoch Ordnance Survey maps. It is two-storeyed with a five bay front and a gable the middle three bays. A hall, indoor firing range and garages lie behind. In 1914 the hall was the base for "D" Company, 6th battalion Gordon Highlanders.

Architecture Notes

T.A. Drill Hall, West Church Street, Banff is depicted on the OS 2nd edition map (Banffshire, sheet II, 1903). It was reported in error that the building was demolished in 1973. Information from RCAHMS (LKFJ), August 2001.

Project (March 2013 - September 2013)

A project to characterise the quantity and quality of the Scottish resource of known surviving remains of the First World War. Carried out in partnership between Historic Scotland and RCAHMS.
