Archaeological Notes
NJ81NW 23 8404 1629.
The Burgh Courts of Hatton ceased after 1746, and the stones of the Tolbooth were used to build a house in Hatton. All that now remains is the arch of an entrance.
J Catto 1901
The tolbooth may have been erected when the court of 1621 was established or on the demolition of the Manor House about 1680, but it is not until 1719 that meetings are described as having been held in the tolbooth...an arched doorway still remains.
J Cruickshank 1937
NJ 8404 1629. The arch mentioned above stands isolated in a yard at the rear of Fintray post office. It is part of a vault and is constructed of rough stone and stands to a height of 1.8m. The block of masonry is 4.0m long, the arch itself being 2.0m wide, 1.6m broad and 0.6m thick at the base.
Visited by OS (EGC) 26 October 1961.
