Accessing Scotland's Past
The Square in Tomintoul dates back to the earliest phase of the village's history, forming part of the original plan laid out by Alexander, 4th Duke of Gordon, in the late eighteenth century.
At the centre of the town, The Square is host to a number of commercial buildings, including three hotels, a bank and a post office. The tourist information centre and the museum are also located here.
Many of the buildings date from the late nineteenth century, but at least one dates back to the late eighteenth century and may have been part of the original foundation. The cast-iron drinking fountain is dated 1915, and was a gift to the village by a former resident, Robert Gordon.
