Montrose [name: NO 720 572].

21 April 1883, MARY, 21 yrs old, of Norway, wooden schooner, 104 tons, 6 crew, Master and Owner J. A. Pettersen, Farsund, Norway, departed Haugesund for Leith, in ballast, wind SE1, stranded, total loss, Montrose Sands, off Co. Forfar.
Source: PP Abstracts Returns of Wrecks and Casualties on Coasts of the UK 1882-83 (1884 [C.4154] LXXI.621).
MARY. Montrose, April 21, 10 35 a.m. The MARY, of and from Haugesund, Petersen, for Leith, in ballast, anchored last night in thick weather, two miles north of Montrose. Her cable parted, and she stranded on sands. May probably be got off: crew of six saved by Montrose lifeboat. [Record received incomplete].
NMRS, MS/829/69 (no. 3378).
(Classified as wooden schooner, in ballast: date of loss cited as 21 April 1883). Mary: this vessel stranded on Montrose Sands. Capt. Pettersen.
Registration: Norwegian. Built 1862. 104 tons [unspecified].
(Location of loss cited as N56 43.00 W2 26.50).
I G Whittaker 1998.
(Location re-entered as NO c. 725 570 [N56 42.2 W2 27.0]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. The vessel evidently stranded on the extensive sandbank that lines the N side of the approach to Montrose Harbour (from the E). Montrose Harbour of Port of Montrose (NO75NW 44.00) is centred at NO 7123 5121.
The vessel may alternatively have stranded within the area of the Links of Montrose, which form an extensive area of coastal sands extending N from the entrance to Montrose Harbour to the E of the town of Montrose, between NO c. 725 570 and NO c. 732 602. They may be seen as forming a southern continuation of Charleton and Kinnaber Links, and the Sands of St Cyrus.
