Archaeology Notes

NO75NW 8064 c. 725 569

N56 42.2 W2 27.0

NLO: Montrose [name: NO 720 572].

Location formerly entered as NO c. 712 571 [N56 42.3 W2 28.2].

(Registration cited as SR-367, and location of loss as 'Montrose, Basin, entrance to South Esk River').

R Larn and B Larn 1998.

(Classified as RLSS Lifeboat, in ballast: date of loss cited as 22 March 1900). Robert Henderson: [this vessel] stranded at the entrance to [the] River South Esk, Forfar. Capt. Stephens.

Not registered.

(Location of loss cited as N56 42.25 W2 26.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

(Location entered as NO c. 712 571 [N56 42.3 W2 28.2]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. This vessel apparently stranded within the extensive and ill-defined area of Montrose Harbour (NO75NW 44.00), which is centred around NO 7123 5721.

The remains of the vessel were presumably removed without delay from this constrained location.

A lifeboat station (NO75NW 44.10) is noted at NO 72121 56970, but it remains unclear whether this is the station that was in service at the date of loss of this vessel, or whether the vessel was driven from anchor near it,

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 24 October 2001.

(Location re-entered as NO c. 725 569 [N56 42.2 W2 27.0]). The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the circumstances of loss ('at the entrance to [the] River South Esk') that are cited by Whittaker.

Montrose Harbour or the Port of Montrose (NO75NW 44.00) occupies an ill-defined area around NO 7123 5121. It does not have a clearly-defined entrance, but is approached (from the E) between the extensive estuarine sandbanks of the River South Esk, which extend as far East as Scurdie Ness [name: NO 735 567]. This vessel evidently stranded within the area of these sandbanks.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 15 November 2011.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the circumstances of loss ('at the entrance to [the] River South Esk') that are cited by Whittaker. This vessel most probably stranded on one of the numerous estuarine sandbanks between which Montrose Harbour is approached.

Montrose Harbour does not have a clearly-defined entrance as such, but is approached (from the E) between estuarine sandbanks. The present Montrose Harbour or Port of Montrose (NO75NW 44.00) is centred at NO 7123 5121.
