Archaeology Notes

NJ90NW 115 centred 9430 0636.

NJ 9431 0638. A large quantity of flint flakes and pebble cores, suggesting late Mesolithic-early Neolthic occupation was uncovered beneath evidence of 13th century to 15th century domestic occupation, by an urban rescue excavation, on the site of an 18th century -19th century building on Broad St-Queen St in 1973.

C Greig, J Dent and C Brooks 1973.

(Location cited as NJ 9431 0638). Medieval site with prehistoric horizon. Building evidence beneath closes at 4 Broad St included remains of wattle and daub, half timbering, timber and clay-built stonework dating from between the 13th and 15th centuries. One oak corner post survived to a height of 1.3m. Three pits behind these houses produced French, Yorkshire and Rhineland pottery as well as native wares and animal bones, spindle whorls, lether, textiles, bronze and iron objects.

Excavation in Queen St revealed a large 14th century midden with large quantities of animal, fowl and fish bones, leather (boots and shoes), worked antler, textiles, heather, leaves, nuts and shells as well as two bone playing-dice and two finely-decorated spindle-whorls. Slightly earlier in date than the midden were a series of interrelated pits which had been infilled with 14th century rubbish after going out of use. One of them had the timber lining of a wooden vat. These were industrial pits and may have been a late 13th/early 14th century tannery. The rubbish fill of the pits produced much the same material as the midden plus a face-masked jug and some 1th century pots.

A prehistoric horizon consisting of a thin layer of soil which covered the natural sand and gravel produced a large quantity of flint flakes and prebble cores which were possibly of late Mesolithic/early Neolithic date.

NMRS, MS/712/83.

(Classified as Flints; Flint Arrowhead: Barbed-And-Tanged; Urban Excavation). In 1973 about 107 pieces of flint were recovered by excavation of 12-26 Broad Street. Most of them are probably of Mesolithic date, including a microlith, a retouched piece, microburins, a notched piece, scrapers, burins, cores and waste material. In addition there is a barbed-and-tanged arrowhead of greyish white flint with straight, unserrated edges and unequal rounded barbs and a rounded tang. It measures 22mm (originally c.29mm) in length by 21mm in breadth across the barbs and 4mm in thickness. The finds from the excavation are now in Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum.
