Archaeological Notes
NJ90NW 127 9449 0642.
'Survey work and excavation on a terrace of 17th and 18th century housing behind the Castlegate. Terrace was originally constructed c.1650 and substantially rebuilt c.1750. Further rebuilding at the southern end of the terrace took place c.1830. Documentary evidence shows that the whole terrace was being rented for multi-tenancy occupancy by the mid 19th Century. Excavation produced a useful sequence of post medieval material, including wasters and kiln furniture from a local slipware kiln in the mid 19th Century'.
