Archaeology Notes

NS32SW 295 Centred on NS 33574 22098

An archaeological evaluation carried out in advance of proposed redevelopment work revealed an extensive sequence of deposits.

Beneath modern levels, composed primarily of asphalt and hard-packed rubble, alternating horizons of wind-blown dune sand and deliberately spread midden material were observed. These overlay a retaining wall and ditch which had probably formed part of the medieval and later boundary between burgage plots which faced onto Sandgate, an interpretation supported by the substantial quantities of late medieval ceramics recovered from associated contexts.

The truncated remains of a post-medieval well were also recorded, cutting through the earlier sand and midden deposits.
