Archaeological Notes

NJ90NW 56 c. 943 062

(Area NJ 943 062). The existence of a mint in Aberdeen is testified by the occurrence of coins and dies bearing the name of the city and covering the period from the reign of Alexander II (1214-49) to that of James IV (1488-1513). It would certainly not be in operation after 1527 when a permanent 'cunzie-house' was established in Edinburgh. An old building known as 'the Mint' stood on Exchequer Row, between Stronach's Close and Burnett's Close; and a coat of arms from it was preserved in Mitchell Hall, Marischal College, in 1911. The site of the building cannot now be established due to re-development.
Visited by OS (JLD) 11 September 1952.

The site of this mint lies in a redeveloped part of the city.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, ATW), 26 February 1997.
