Desk Based Assessment (29 August 2017)
The suspension bridge that crossed the River Clyde between Bothwell (to the east) and Blantyre, and is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (Lanark 1859, Sheet XI.11), was opened in 1852, having been built by the Monteiths of Blantyre Works. Spanning 73m, it was known as the Pey Brig due to the toll that was to be paid at the small tollbooth located on the Blantyre end. The bridge was demolished in 1949 and replaced in 1952 by the David Livingstone Memorial Footbridge (NS65NE 70) which was constructed 200m downstream.
